Hugh O’Brien is elected chairman of the Board of Aldermen.

He is the first Irish-Catholic elected chairman of the Board of Aldermen. According to Francis Russell, “[O’Brien’s election] marks the first break in the Yankee political structure of the city, although the Irish position was not consolidated for another generation.”
